‘Ethical’ Gifts on Shopping List for a Third of Britons: Survey

Dec 11th, 2006 • Posted in: News

LONDON
About a third of all shoppers in the United Kingdom plan to buy “ethical” gifts for Christmas, according to a recent survey.

The Glasgow Evening Times reports that a study by the investment firm Friends Provident notes that the gifts include organic or Fairtrade food, ethically sourced clothing, and charity donations.

About 60 percent of those surveyed said they believe more people are adding an ethical dimension to their shopping this year compared to last, reports Finance News Online.

Other popular options in Britain include what the Scotsman termed “virtual” ethical presents, such as purchasing a goat for a family in the developing world.

And according to the London Daily Telegraph, another “virtual” present expected to be hot this Christmas is adopting endangered species, such as orangutans or pandas, through charities such as the World Wildlife Fund.
